Spotlight on Freedom

Ukraine

In the Quest for Peace in Ukraine, the World Must Not Forget Those Living in Russian-Occupied Crimea
By Aimee Chen, and Katie LaRoque
Key Points:

Freedom House presented its inaugural Alfred Moses Liberty Award to Server Mustafayev, a Crimean Tatar human rights defender who has been unjustly imprisoned by Russian authorities since 2020. His wrongful detention is part of a broader campaign by Russian authorities to forcibly “Russify” and suppress non-Russian identities in Crimea. Sustaining Our Commitment to the Enduring Cause of Freedom
Key Points:

TNR Watch: Answering Chinese Bounties with US Sanctions
Key Points:

In March, the US government imposed sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials for intimidating and harassing Hong Kong activists abroad. Such foreign policy responses from the United States and other democracies are vital to countering transnational repression, but by themselves they do not comprehensively address the problem.

Two Years of War in Sudan: From Revolution to Ruin and the Fight to Rise Again
By Quscondy Abdulshafi
Key Points:

As Sudan marks two years since the eruption of war between rival military factions—the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—the country stands at a dangerous crossroads. The question that looms large is whether hope for a democratic future still lives or has it vanished amid the gunfire and violence of war?
