Talk, Trust, and Trade-Offs: How and Why Teens Use AI Companions

A new type of relationship is emerging in teens' lives—one that feels like connection but is powered by code. Our new research reveals that nearly three in four teens have used AI companions, and half use them regularly.

Their reasons for doing so aren't black-and-white. While entertainment and curiosity drive their use of AI companions—nearly half of teens view AI companions as tools rather than friends—a substantial minority are turning to these platforms for social interaction. A third of teens have chosen AI companions over humans for serious conversations, and a quarter have shared personal information with these platforms.

Our research illuminates risks that warrant action—not panic, but precaution—from all of us:

  • Tech companies must implement strong age-assurance systems and design AI products with kids' safety in mind.
  • Educators should take the lead on digital literacy to help kids safely navigate an AI-powered world.
  • Policymakers must set up clear, enforceable safeguards on kids' AI use.
  • Parents can start judgment-free conversations with their kids and set healthy boundaries.

In the meantime, Common Sense Media maintains that the peril outweighs the potential of AI companions—at least in their current form. Our findings reaffirm our earlier recommendation that no one under 18 should use these platforms.
