51 years ago, August 9, 1974, with Betty Ford by his side, Gerald R. Ford was sworn in by Chief Justice Warren Burger as the 38th President of the United States after Nixon resigned. Here’s the opening line of his speech in the East Room of the White House upon taking office: “The oath that I have taken is the same oath that was taken by George Washington and by every President under the Constitution. Judge William Webster, the only person to lead both the FBI and CIA, is dead at 101. I took this of him in 2015 during his interview for @showtime and @48hourscbs documentary, "The Spymasters: CIA in the Crosshairs" that I exec-produced with @whipplc @susanzirinsky @gedeonnaudet and Jules Naudet. The judge was FBI and CIA director back when they were serious not toady jobs. On this day 51 years ago, Aug. 6, 1974, I was in the room for the beginning of Nixon`s last cabinet meeting. Vice President Gerald R. Ford is in the foreground with President Nixon across the table with Sec. of State Henry Kissinger who said afterwards, "It was the tensest that I`ve ever attended, and was as close to a revolt of a cabinet against a president as I hope we`ll ever see." Tough customer. My pic of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev 50 yrs ago In Helsinki at the Conf on Security and Cooperation in Europe. NSC chairman Brent Scowcroft said this picture showed the real him! In my role as White House photographer I was able to get near people you normally could only see from a distance.
