$4.6M fire station to speed up service in Des Moines
The Des Moines Fire Department will see a boost in service thanks to a new $4.6 million fire station.
Fire Station 11 will be located at East 42nd Street and Hubbell Avenue.
Des Moines Fire Chief John TeKippe, who asked for the new station more than five years ago, said it will help speed up the department's response time on the northeast side of the city.
"That stretch along Hubble is our longest drive to one of our borders," TeKippe said. "That's our longest response time and this will cut that response time in half."
For years Des Moines and Altoona fire departments have used a mutual aid agreement to help cover the area. TeKippe said the agreement will continue with the addition of a 24-hour Des Moines crew.
"Building Station 11 is really important for the level of safety that the neighborhood should be able to enjoy," he said.
The building will feature three bays for fire trucks and an ambulance, and the new design will offer separate bedrooms instead of a dorm for sleeping firefighters.
Brett Bagby, who works at the nearby Porter Hardware, said he is excited to see the new fire station plans.
"It looks very nice," Bagby said. "I think it will be a good addition the neighborhood."
Construction crews will break ground on Fire Station 11 in April 2020. The building should be ready by spring 2021.
