Economic and financial sanctions are an integral lever of U.S. national security and foreign policy. The dozens of active U.S. sanctions programs can also come with unintended challenges. As the Treasury Department completes its top-to-bottom U.S. sanctions policy review, what conclusions have been made and what will the future use of this powerful tool look like? Treasury's recently released sanctions review emphasizes the need for stronger multilateral efforts, modernization of sanctions tools to address emerging technology threats, and more effective targeting of sanctions.
On Thursday, October 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT, Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, who led the department’s review, will join the Center for a New American Security for a wide-ranging conversation on the findings and what to expect from the Biden administration’s use of sanctions moving forward. He will be joined by former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Ambassador Paula Dobriansky. The event will include audience questions moderated by CNAS Senior Fellow and Director of the Energy, Economic and Security Program Emily Kilcrease.
