Lyon vs. Wolfsburg score: French club wins Women's Champions League for fifth consecutive season

Olympique Lyonnais defeated VfL Wolfsburg, 3-1, on Sunday to lift the Champions League trophy for the fifth consecutive season. Lyon was able to dictate the tempo of the match from the first whistle as they quickly asserted themselves into their high press and began their offensive attack. 

Lyon earned the opening goal in the 25th minute thanks to the work of Delphine Cascarino down the flank, who was able to pick out Eugenie Le Sommer for the lead. 

Saki Kumagai would add another goal shortly before halftime to give the club a 2-0 lead. 

Wolfsburg entered the second half playing with a renewed sense of urgency, and would eventually cut the lead in half with a goal set up by Ewa Pajor for Alexandria Popp to head the ball into net in the 58th minute. The German side would see time on the ball in the final third during the late minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer. Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir scored an insurance goal for Lyon shortly before stoppage time to secure the title.

Lyon are now seven-time Champions League winners, the most of any club.

Wolfsburg: The effort would prove too little too late for the No. 2 UEFA ranked team today. Wolfsburg faced an uphill battle early on in the match as Lyon asserted themselves with their high press and applied constant pressure forcing the German side to to try and sustain instead of build into their game. After going down in the 25th minute, an extra gut punching goal came off the foot of Kumagai, who nailed a shot from distance just before the half. Wolfsburg would make second-half adjustments and cut into Lyon's lead nearing the hour mark. They continued to find themselves carrying momentum, with time and space in the final third, but were unable to connect despite getting additional looks on set pieces. The adjustments would prove too late as Lyon scored a third goal late, leaving Wolfsburg with questions on their future as they will see the departure of long time coach Stephan Lerch and rumors and star striker Pernille Harder will make way to Chelsea.

Lyon: The team is now seven-time Champions League winners and left no doubt of their legacy in today's final. The French club had appeared to struggle a bit in earlier knockout rounds, having to rely on their usual extraordinary set piece play to score goals and advance into the final. It left room to wonder if they would hit another level as the final approached and Lyon answered all doubters. Thanks in large part to their 23-year-old winger Delphine Cascarino -- who caused problems all day for Wolfsburg defense -- Lyon were able to run the flank and break lines. Kumagai, a Japanese international, scored an exceptional goal before halftime, but her ability to disrupt and isolate Wolfsburg's key playmakers proved pivotal today. Lyon will look to replace some of their English players as Alex Greenwood and Lucy Bronze are set to return to FA WSL, but there is no doubt that the winningest club will have trouble continuing their reign.
