Rams were 4th-healthiest NFL team in 2018, snap 2-year streak at No. 1

The Los Angeles Rams have been very fortunate on the injury front in recent years, losing very few key players for significant periods of time. It’s impossible for every player to stay healthy for all 16 games, but the Rams have benefitted from a lack of injuries lately.

Football Outsiders quantifies just how healthy each team is every season by using a metric called “adjusted games lost. It accounts for a player’s value and the amount of time missed due to injury.

In 2016 and ’17, the Rams ranked first in adjusted games lost, finishing as the healthiest team in the NFL each year. They weren’t as fortunate in 2018, ranking fourth on Football Outsiders’ list. The Ravens, Bills and Bears finished ahead of the Rams in the rankings.

Last season, the Rams lost Aqib Talib and Cooper Kupp each for eight games. Both spent time on injured reserve, while Mark Barron also missed four games. Todd Gurley’s two-game absence also played a part late in the season, as did Malcolm Brown missing four contests down the stretch. Other than that, the Rams were extremely healthy – just not as healthy as they were in 2017.

To put it into perspective, the Rams’ AGL two seasons ago was 15.6; the lower the number, the better. The healthiest team in the league last season, the Bills, had an AGL of 29.7. The Rams’ number in 2018 was 39.6.

Injuries sometimes come down to luck, but the Rams’ remarkable health since 2016 is a testament to the players taking care of their bodies, as well as the work the training staff has done. It’s no coincidence the Rams consistently rank towards the top of the league in Football Outsiders’ metric each year.
