Longtime rivals on the ice, Meghan Duggan, captain of the U.S. women's Olympic hockey team, has married three-time Olympic gold-medal winner Gillian Apps of the Canadian women's team.
Team USA announced the wedding on its website Tuesday. The ceremony took place on Saturday in Pownal, Maine. Duggan was captain for the U.S. team that defeated Canada to win the gold during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February. Duggan was on the losing side of the rivalry at the 2010 and 2014 Games, taking silver with the U.S. women while Canada captured the gold. Apps played for Team Canada at three Olympic Games, winning gold in 2006, 2010 and 2014. She retired from international competition after the 2014 Games. Between them, Duggan and Apps have four Olympic gold medals and 10 world titles. The U.S.-Canada rivalry in women's hockey is one of the most competitive in sports, with the two nations competing for every gold medal since the women's world championship began in 1990. Apps is a third-generation hockey player. Her grandfather was Hockey Hall of Famer Syl Apps, a longtime center for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Her father was NHL player Syl Apps Jr., who played for the New York Rangers, the Los Angeles Kings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
