"It's a go-to read. It maximizes its potency and fulfills its mission. There's a twist or two of which Frederick Forsyth might be proud. So, if you want to make the most of your late-capitalist leisure-time, hit the couch, crack a Bud, punch the book open, focus your squint, and enjoy."

The New Yorker

Michael Connelly, #1 bestselling author of the Ballard and Bosch series

The President Is Missing is heart-pounding, gripping, terrifying. As I read, ferociously turning the pages, I kept asking myself, 'Could this really happen?' They provide a front-row seat to the inner workings of our political system, a plot that is frighteningly plausible, and a cast of complex characters--both men and women--who all have their own stake to claim. The result: a fast-paced summer read you'll see on planes, trains, and every beach across the country and around the world."

Never mind who co-authored the book, it is a FANTASTIC read
The book captured my attention from page one and I could not put it down. It is brilliantly and beautifully written with drama, suspense, and insight that only a few people in this world can have. I almost wish that Bill Clinton's name was not on the cover of the book because it seems that people are polarizing and politicizing the whole thing. Regardless of who wrote the book, if you love a great novel of suspense with historical context, if you are a political junkie who enjoys novels, if you like to binge on exciting drama and suspense, then you would probably enjoy reading this book. It is a thick book, over 500 pages and 100+ chapters that will keep you reading page after page, chapter after chapter. It feels solid in your hand and your lap. It will keep you entertained for hours, if not days.

The President is Missing was one of the most entertaining, fascinating, thought provoking and informative books I've read in a long time. It's a page-turner of the first order and has sufficient plot twists and ancillary characters to keep you interested. This book succeeds on three levels, in my opinion - entertainment-wise (plot), politically and technologically. If you've read any of the one-star reviews of this book, you must be thinking, "Wow - how do we get from 'I hated it - too improbable, too mundane a plot'," to "...thought provoking and informative..."? First of all, no offense intended, but James Patterson is not Tolstoy. Or Sartre. Or Tom Wolfe. To expect pure literary exceptionalism is dumb. What he is is a prolific author with an incredible imagination and the ability to create fun, entertaining and sometimes compelling reads that help you to distance yourself from the real world for a few hours. Sure there are elements that go beyond the normal and the accepted, but to me they add the fun to the read. However, all that being said, this book brought a lot of what I consider important insight with it. President Clinton's contributions are obivous and something only a person who has been in that office could provide. To me, someone who has never been in politics and is pretty much black and white on what I like and don't like, seeing the machinations in the political realm that are necessary, common place and even expected when you hold that office was eye-opening. Watching the characters positioning themselves and taking actions to improve their positions, and then negotiating or trying to negotiate their way out of it when it goes awry is fascinating. And to see the hard choices that have to be made, choices that go beyond personal likes and dislikes in order to maintain order, continuity and confidence of the public was enlightening - it showed the spectrum of grey that exists in every situation. Finally, on the technological level, the possible havoc that cyber-warfare can wreak was accurately portrayed and should scare the bejesus out of anyone reading this book. They postulate and proselytize about our dependence on the internet, and it's all true. This stuff is real, folks, and to not pay attention is to bury your head in the sand. I saw that Richard Clark was one of the consultants on this book and after reading some of his books on the vulnerabilities of our various infrastructures - water, power, fuel- we should all take this seriously and have plans should that day come when we have no power, no potable water, no phones, and, probably worst of all, no internet on which we are so desperately dependent. I highly recommend this book to every American

I will admit to being anxious to read this book because I have recently started reading political thrillers.  I've been a fan of Patterson for a number of years now.  So, him having access to the personal knowledge of an ex-president should make for a good story.  In short, I really enjoyed the book and found it very entertaining and suspenseful, now with that being said, not everything read well in books as it should in a movie.  This book will make for a good screenplay to become a movie and I will explain why.

The President is Missing opens up with what is supposed to be a hearing from an oversight committee with the President as their intended perp, but it is revealed to be a mock session set up by his team of advisors.  It turns out that because of a questionable decision made by the president, the Speaker of the House now has it out for him.  Due to national security implications theres not a lot that the president can divulge to the Speaker or anyone else he has dealing with throughout the day.  So, there is a lot of cloak and dagger going on in the first few chapter which really helps to build the mystery.

As the story continues to build we are introduced to a mysterious character that, through unconventional means, has a one on one set up between her and the president.  She assures him that if he does not comply with her request The United States will be in a world of hurt.  She also assured him that if anything happens to her, her partner would never be seen when he strikes.

The president agrees to her terms against all advice makes arrangements to leave The White House completely alone without any support or protection whatsoever and from there starts a worldwide of events that lead to cyberterrorism plot to bring the country to its knees making us vulnerable to attacks from any and everyone on all fronts.

You can clearly see which author had the most influence from chapter to chapter.  There will be chapters that have tons of political speak and conversations about regulations and laws, all Clinton.  Then a chapter that will build upon the mystery in a fast pace way with bullets coming from every direction in the midst of a black out with the concussive force of a grenade.  That was a Patterson chapter.

BUT here is why I say it would be better as a movie, from the climax of the book to the denouement, the focus was on the team of white hat hackers and coders that have been tasked with reversing and foiling the attack that is underway.  This is something that is hard to build a lot of steam behind because of the different points of views that need to be addressed.  I have to give it to Patterson he did the best he could, which was pretty damn good, making this read as well as it did.  You at times feel that you were there in the subbasement in the thick of it all.

Overall, I was not disappointed in the book, but that is one man's opinion.  I never go by what the majority says because they cannot speak for what I like.  If you are a fan of technology, action, political thriller and or mystery I encourage you to give it a try.  I gave just enough to entice but not enough to spoil it.  Let me know what you think.
