Heartbreak feels good in a movie like Daniela Forever.

In writer / director Nacho Vigalondo’s Daniela Forever, the grief Nick (Henry Golding) feels over the sudden death of his girlfriend Daniela (Beatrice Grannò) leads him to a clinical trial for a drug that induces lucid dreaming. Nick’s drug-fueled dreams are meant to help pull him out of his depression, but as the movie’s new trailer teases, things go terribly (and beautifully) wrong. The movie’s in theaters July 11th.

Trump moves to expedite approvals and truncate environmental review of new nuclear reactors.

He signed a series of executive orders today meant to revive the nuclear energy industry in the US, which has struggled to compete with cheaper sources of electricity. The president could also hit the Nuclear Regulatory Commission with layoffs as part of a broader reorganization of the agency.

Trump’s tariffs threat extends to Samsung.

When asked about his latest tariff threat toward Apple, President Donald Trump said the 25 percent tax would affect Samsung and other phone makers, too. “It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair,” Trump said during a White House briefing.

Last week, Trump warned Apple CEO Tim Cook that he’s “not interested in you building in India,” and instead wants to bring iPhone production to the US — a move many experts have said won’t work.

    The Honey exposé fallout continues.

Six months after the coupon hunting extension Honey was accused of cheating shoppers and influencers, it appears the PayPal-owned tool is still losing users. According to 9to5Google, the number of Chrome extension users continues to drop — at one point 20 million people used the extension. Now, that number is down to 15 million.

The brewing fight at Politico over AI.

Unionized workers at Politico allege the company violated its contract by using AI-generated content in a live blog — and are escalating their complaint to arbitration this summer. The union says the AI-generated summaries contained factual errors and language that’s off-limits for writers. The result of arbitration could set an important precedent for an industry that’s seen countless AI disputes in recent years.

California says it’ll sue after Congress revoked its plans to mandate more EV sales.

Republicans fast-tracked passage of the resolutions using a maneuver that nonpartisan watchdogs said should be barred, and that Governor Gavin Newsom calls illegal. The Clean Air Act gives California authority to set state pollution limits that are more stringent than federal regulation.

Time to go back to sleep.

That’s gotta be a bizarre thing to wake up to, but at least it didn’t block the Suez Canal?

Even with a 25 percent tariff, Apple has little incentive to bring manufacturing back home.

So says supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo. Back in April, I also spoke to several other supply chain experts who said the exact same thing. Here’s the gist: The U.S. simply does not have the manufacturing capability or a skilled workforce to do this and rebuilding it will take significant funds and time. Paying the tariff is simply cheaper (for the company), faster, and more profitable.

    Unescape to New York.

Bluesky reminded me that John Carpenter’s Escape from New York has a deleted ten-minute opening sequence, and while I think he made the right choice cutting it, it’s a pretty fun short heist film that barely even requires having seen the film.

The dark side of wearable tech.

I wear three to five wearables all the time, so I relate to the anxiety described in this New York Times article. Managing it is a huge part of my job, which is why I wrote this how-to with a lot of my tips and tricks. And as I’ve said on many a Vergecast episode, I purposefully break streaks to preserve my mental health. Friendly reminder from your neighborhood wearables expert: you are allowed to take breaks.

Some Game Boy games for your long weekend.

Nintendo just updated its Switch Online subscription service with a nice mix of four retro handheld titles: the survival game Survival Kids, sci-fi shooter Gradius: Interstellar Assault, puzzler Kirby’s Star Stacker, and RPG The Sword of Hope.

Frustrated Trump wants a 50 percent tariff on EU goods.

The tariff Trump is “recommending” would start on June 1st, but no official action has been ordered yet. His post on Truth Social says the European Union was “formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on trade,” and blames the bloc for a US trade deficit of $250 million per year.

Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025. There is no Tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States.

Will the real Register please speak up?

Shira Perlmutter, who may or may not be the head of the Copyright Office depending on how deranged the Supreme Court’s interpretation of executive power becomes, has now sued the Trump administration, including Perlmutter’s supposed replacement Paul Perkins “in his capacity as the person claiming to be the Register of Copyrights.”
