Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump Hardcover – June 19, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
On November 9th, 2016, Dan Pfeiffer woke up like most of the world wondering WTF just happened. How had Donald Trump won the White House? How was it that a decent and thoughtful president had been succeeded by a buffoonish reality star, and what do we do now?
Instead of throwing away his phone and moving to another country (which were his first and second thoughts), Pfeiffer decided to tell this surreal story, recounting how Barack Obama navigated the insane political forces that created Trump, explaining why everyone got 2016 wrong, and offering a path for where Democrats go from here.
Pfeiffer was one of Obama's first hires when he decided to run for president, and was at his side through two presidential campaigns and six years in the White House. Using never-before-heard stories and behind-the-scenes anecdotes, Yes We (Still) Can examines how Obama succeeded despite Twitter trolls, Fox News (and their fake news), and a Republican Party that lost its collective mind.
An irreverent, no-BS take on the crazy politics of our time, Yes We (Still) Can is a must-read for everyone who is disturbed by Trump, misses Obama, and is marching, calling, and hoping for a better future for the country.

"I love YES WE (STILL) CAN for many reasons, but most importantly because you will all get to know and learn from the best bro I know. Seriously."―Alyssa Mastromonaco, New York Times bestselling author of Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018Loved this book. I'm a longtime Friend of the Pod but was still pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. First, it's funny. Two, it shows the human (and funny and insightful) side of President Obama. Three, I've been really curious about how people end up working at the White House. In another life, I would love to have been Dan. Some of the lessons he learned (perhaps being overprotective of "the boss") are things I've also experienced, though not in politics. And, finally, I appreciate the thought Dan has given to why we are in a Trump world and how we can move on from a highly discouraging situation. He gives me some hope. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Obama or is interested in a career in politics (no matter which party).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2018If the 2016 election and the Trump presidency have diminished your faith in humanity, this is a book that you need to read. I loved the insider stories about life on the Obama campaigns and administration. But more importantly, this book is very forward looking. Dan Pfeiffer presents an optimistic and insightful vision for how left-leaning citizens and defenders of democracy of all stripes can take action and succeed in this political and media environment. I cruised through this book, enjoyed every page, and left feeling more hopeful than ever for our country.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021This was a good book based on the Obama years and the immediate changes afterwards by someone who was there. Lots of good information and stories. My only negative is that it jumped back and forth a few times. I recommend to anyone interested in Obama as President
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2018Our current political reality is a hard pill to swallow, but Dan Pfeiffer at least gives a really funny and digestible personal account of how we got here. The book is motivating and inspiring, and chock-full of fun anecdotes that attest to the brilliance and integrity of Obama and his team.
The observations on the (d)evolution of media in the past decade are canny and illuminating, also extremely depressing and worrisome. How can progressive activism best be paired with savvy communications to rise above the overflowing sewer of fake news and right-wing propaganda? While there are no easy solutions, it's at least encouraging to have an insider's view of the landscape and opportunities for change.
Do you love reading smart-a**, caustic takedowns of the shameful swarm of low-rent racists and criminals leading the GOP?
Are you an energetic progressive in need of validation and peer support for your ceaseless activism and packed protest schedule?
Do you love to laugh while secretly crying inside and seething at the tragedy of modern American politics?
Read this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2018So well written, I nearly cried at the end of the last three chapters. I read about a book a month and this is easily my favorite book of the past three years.
Dan has hit the absolute perfect balance of storytelling, catharsis, hope and humor.
The whole way through, I felt like I had just won an argument with an enemy and gotten high-fives and hugs from all the smartest onlookers.
And the footnotes on each page? Super-hilarious.
I thoroughly enjoyed the mild snarkiness, but the book is so much more than that. It's an unvarnished inside look into the 2008 campaign, the rigorous eight years of high-stress governing, and the strange election of 2016. Dan's observations are consistently astute and entertaining.
If you voted for Barack or like Pod Save America even a little bit, you do not want to miss this!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019I just finished reading this book. As an American who dreads the current administration, I found this book to be inspiring, funny, and most importantly, a motivation to believe that “we still can.” At the end of the day, it’s easy to forget that there were many people with their stories to share about working with the greatest President of our time. I liked reading his accounts during the various challenging times during Obama’s presidency. Additionally, the way it is written makes it easy to follow, and makes you want to finish reading this quickly to better understand what it will take for Democrats to win again. I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2018Funny, inspirational, so readable, but most of all hopeful; I found Dan's book to be extremely well written and engaging. This book is a thoughtful reflection and analysis of so much of our political landscape.
As one of the many Baby Boomer fans of all the guys at Pod Save America, I'm cheering for this book's success. It's a must-read for everyone, and I'm telling all my friends.
Thank you, Dan Pfeiffer! Keep doing your excellent work that is a true service to our country!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope in a dark world
Dan Pfeiffer.
Okay I'll admit it. I had no idea who he was before I started listening to Pod Save America. Being a Brit I had never heard of Keeping It 1600 and I can't remember how but I could myself listening to PSA episode 1 and loved it. The irreverent humour, the passion, the rage, the high level of debate... It felt like I was listening to a podcast that the characters of The West Wing might have created and I was in love.
I pre-ordered this book as soon as they started flogging it on the show having no idea if I would enjoy it. I was non disappointed. Dan on paper is like Dan on the show. The story telling on this pages about his time with Obama and how to create the same hope and change now is perfect. He made me laugh out loud and at several points get very choked up. His very eloquent and intelligent observations on what went wrong and how to fix it prove that there is a world class political mind in there that should be listened to, and, boy, I hope someone does.
Also, I have a new respect for the humble footnote now.
Thank you for giving me hope again.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... down into the american history as one of the best President; but for the GOP he could have ...
Dan Pfeiffer's book gives a delightful insight into the Obamas presidency and profile of the man who in my estimation
will go down into the american history as one of the best President; but for the GOP he could have accomplished so much more.
The world lost a great Leader.
