―USA Today
"Highly entertaining." ―The New York Times
"Never having met O'Brien...I don't presume to know whether he's having fun yet. But I doubt that I'm alone among members of the Fourth Estate in experiencing a twinge of envy." ―New Yorker
"At the start of his career in hype and carnival barking, the press fawned over Trump; he made great copy. It's refreshing that reality has finally crept into the coverage." ―Village Voice
"An engrossing romp...hilarious...peppered with wit and irony...the perfect base to Trump's acidic persona...an instructive tongue-in-cheek primer for would-be Trumps." ―Publishers Weekly
"Sarcastic at times, hilarious and irreverent at others, the book demystifies the star of The Apprentice as the poor man's rich man and portrays him as a potty-mouthed P. T. Barnum with a bad comb-over." ―Palm Beach Post
"Entertaining...gets down and dirty...a myth-busting biography."
―Kirkus Reviews
"Somewhere there is another country, far beyond the pale, known as Bad Taste, and Trump has devoted his life to racing through it and staking as many private claims as possible, pausing only to yodel back to the homeland songs of himself." ― Michael Lewis, author of Liar's Poker and Moneyball

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2017Extremely well written! Entertaining and enjoyable! I decided to buy the book after listening to the author on MSNBC. I felt he had a good insight into Trump. I wasn't disappointed! He tells the story with facts and data through the sweep and color of the 80's, through the 90's and up to 2005. What I thought about Trump was heightened in both directions; positive and negative. His creativity and vision as a builder was "amazing." But then his mismanagement combined with an out of control personal life puts him on the edge of financial destruction, Yet he manages to climb back from that through his "unbelievable" capabilities for self promotion. He is unique and brilliant at this. The problem is that the next thing that he says is solely for his self-promotion and self preservation. Doesn't have to be the truth! Doesn't have to be a lie! It's all about him. It's a disaster for Trump to be our president. You can't trust what he's saying. He could destroy our country and not even realizing he's doing it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2007I rate this book as 3½ stars.
After I heard Donald Trump was suing the publisher of this book for 5 BILLION dollars, I knew I just had to read it. Perhaps that was all part of Donald's plan, but I fell for it, and I'm glad I did.
I've been a big fan of Donald Trump ever since I just happened to stumble upon one of his books (I got it for free in a real estate seminar). I had a great appreciation of his business talents and, after reading what Donald had to say about himself instead of what the press had to say about him, I appreciated his attitude. This book changed that.
This book changed my opinion of Trump, but neither in a positive nor negative way. Surely, this book lays out a very convincing case for Donald's net worth or business prowess to be nothing near as much as he claims. But it also gives a dimension of personality which never really came through in his own works.
The stories covered and quotes are excellent - especially from Donald himself. He is TRULY a character. The author takes a balanced look at nearly all the major projects Donald mentioned in _The Art of the Deal_, and many of the details (and some not so detailed facts) are pertinent; the book also cites sources meticulously. Did you know Donald went over budget $50 million on The Plaza Hotel and had to be bailed out by his dad - what ever happened to television city - was it really smart to take on the city officials and say "this city is a cesspool of corruption and incompetence" while Donald was asking them for a ¾ billion dollar tax break?
Not that the look at Trump is really "bad". His personality really shines in this book. For a rich guy, he is really anti-establishment, a cheapskate, and is very personable. You get a real feel for what he's really like. After reading this book, maybe I wouldn't want to follow his business advice blindly, but I'm more likely to want to sit down and have a beer with the guy - he sounds fun. To say Trump is a BS artist is like declaring the sky is blue - I always knew his projects were spun with his own opinions, so it's good to see a different viewpoint on his familiar projects.
So why only 3½ stars? Because, despite the fact that the content of the story is great, the book is terribly written. For the author's sake, I hope there was a rush to publish because of the aforementioned lawsuit, because this has all of the organizational and journalistic talent of a high-school cheerleader writing a business memo. There's no organization, no structure, and bad jokes all over - luckily, the content of the book outweighs this otherwise unreadable mess.
Bottom line is that if you've enjoyed Trump's past books, reading this book will give you a non-spin version of his business deals - and really introduce you to the man himself.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2016I bought this book upon reading a profile piece on the subject matter in the New Yorker that contained a reference to this book. Overall, I found it informative and fairly well-researched. In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a supporter of Trump although I find him occasionally amusing fodder for otherwise dull political coverage. As far as biographies go, it's a fairly breezy read and I knocked it out aboard an airplane in about three hours. The early life stuff about Trump is fairly thin in favor of covering many of his well-publicized exploits as he rose to prominence. Some of the details about Trump's earliest business forays are the most interesting and provide excellent detail, including interviews by the subject. The author also keeps checklists at the end of each chapter that serve to poke fun at Trump. Much of this information you will probably be able to find in articles being published by the New Yorker, the WSJ, Barron's and many other publications but at least this provides one stop shopping.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2016His claim of being a billionaire is a work of fiction. Goes behind the scenes of years of Trumps business dealings.
A well written, entertaining book. Comical in some parts. Exposes years of Trumps business dealings. Very easy read.
If I put a 5% down payment on ten, one hundred million dollar properties, would that make me worth one billion dollars?
He forgets to back out the money he owes the banks.
He sued the author and lost . The American people should read this book to see who we have elected President.
If people ( and his other Republican nominees had bothered to read this book he may not have been given the job of President. Too bad people only have time to watch should bites on Fox news.
Everything is borrowed. He
You'll understand why he could never release his tax returns.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2016An immensely insightful and thought-provoking book. I have read several of the subjects autobiographical books in the past, so this book is an interesting counterpart. Initially this book written originally before his last historic run for the presidency (with a forward written just as his campaign began), based on the author's extensive interviews with the man himself. This book clearly shows that the personality and actions he demonstrated in the last two years were no aberration but are a part of who he fundamentally is. This book is written for the reader who wants to know more about the real man, in terms of his business dealings, and the careful formulation of the public image of this man, even though this image and reality may not be the same thing. As a warning, those who strongly favor him, should look elsewhere to find something more complimentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read... all Trump never wanted people to know!
Wow! Eye-opening! What a con man!
His father and siblings bailed him out multiple times through the 1980's, 1990's, and by 2005? He was dead broke. No wonder he didn't want to show his tax returns. He has only dealt with mobsters and crooks. He was never a billionaire. He was worth nothing, assets vs. debts, until "The Apprentice" saved him from losing everything he had. Then, his attempts to keep himself in the news constantly, while condemning the media. Don't buy it. He lives for the media. He lives for constant attention - good and bad, as long as his name is constantly mentioned. He is quite mentally ill. A pathological liar. No conscience whatsoever. A confirmed racist.
He tried to sue the author over the writing of this book, for 5 billion. It was thrown out of court by the judge. Lots more. Very insightful book. Well researched. This is like a truthful continuation of "The Art of the Deal." I recommend it highly. I can't put it down!

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat unstructured and at times repetitive
I found this book difficult to read. The author tends to ramble on, goes back and forth in time in a section and I often forgot where his starting point had been. As to the information provided would consider it reliable (many sources listed). I think he likes hos own words a bit too much. There is much information in this book, it is, however, sometimes difficult to extract (out of the many words in a sentence/section)

4.0 out of 5 stars God help us all
Sometimes critical of Trump, sometimes in awe of him, this book is not the tell-all I was hoping for, but it is nonetheless a fascinating insight into America's next (and possibly last) President. From a young man in the shadow of his father to a reality show superstar, this details every move along the Trump career path, including his inability to make money from a casino his "non-fiction works of fiction" books, and his dreadful taste in what constitutes a "theme", as well as showing the human, likeable side. Read this book while you still can....
